How To Choose The Right Furniture For Your Home The first that comes to mind when you think of furniture is durability. The second thing is aesthetics. Quality furniture requires a great deal of investment in terms of money. Getting furniture that combines beauty and robustness at an affordable price is the most excellent deal you can get. There are several factors to consider so that you can pick furniture that works for you. First, have a theme in mind. There are various living room themes that you can choose from, ranging from the modern theme, traditional theme to the casual theme. The idea you want will determine the kind of furniture you will buy. The size of the furniture you choose for your house can either make your room look stuffed or spacious. Consider the following factors to determine the extent of furniture that you need.Start by taking measurements for your room, including the doorway, and coming up with a floor plan. Measure the size of your wall and make sure the length of your furniture is shorter than that. Leave a space of 18inches on either side of the wall. The sofa can occupy the rest of the space in between. There should be a comfortable walking space where people will not have to move things or squeeze through spaces to find the way.
How Would You Describe Modern Furniture Design? Modern furniture design, also referred to as midcentury modern for its popularity during the mid-20th century, was influenced by the idea that craftsmen and artists could work together to create functional furniture with a more artistic appeal. In the design sense, modern does not refer to the current day, but to a particular aesthetic. The modernist movement sought to reject the traditional design aesthetic while embracing a cleaner, less ornate design along with modern materials made available by technological advances. Furniture designers were eager to try these new materials. They found they could use molded fiberglass to create chairs, or wrap a lounge chair around steel legs rather than a wood frame. The emphasis was on form following function with a more artistic appeal. After World War II, consumers with more disposable income and new suburban homes to furnish clamored for these fresh new designs. Modern furniture design features sleek, straight lines with smooth and shiny surfaces. The focus is on simple geometric shapes rather than heavy ornamentation. The objective is to create an uncluttered look, free from chaotic lines and color schemes. Traditional furniture is visually heavy, while modern design seeks to offer a lighter visual appearance. The use of materials such as stainless steel, nickel or aluminum, exposed light woods, plastic with clean lines and an absence of ornate details are the hallmarks of modern design. Designers such as husband-and-wife team Charles and Ray Eames, Florence Knoll Basset, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Herman Miller and Arne Jacobsen led the modernist movement during the 1950s and '60s. This talented group gave us the Tongue chair, Barcelona chair and other iconic pieces. Milo Baughmann, another modern designer, worked with furniture manufacturers Drexel and Henredon to help bring his updated take on the classic styles to the masses. Basset's company, Knoll, is still in existence and continues to offer modern furniture designs. If modern design appeals to you, seek out vintage pieces by any one of these designers. Quality reproductions can often be found, too.

What is Box Bed? A box-bed (also known as a closed bed, close bed, or enclosed bed) is a bed enclosed in furniture that looks like a cupboard, half-opened or not. The form originates in western European late medieval furniture. The box-bed is closed on all sides by panels of wood. One enters it by removing curtains, opening a door hinge or sliding doors on one or two slides. The bed is placed on short legs to prevent moisture due to a dirt floor. In front of the box-bed was often a large oaken chest, with the same length as the bed. This was always the 'seat of honour,' and served also as a step for climbing into the bed. It was also used to store clothing, underwear and bedding the rest of the time. In the Netherlands the closet-bed, or bedstede, was in common use into the 19th century, particularly in farmhouses in the countryside. Closet-beds were closed off with a door or a curtain. One of the advantages of the closet-bed was that it could be built into the living room and closed off during the day, making a separate bedroom unnecessary. The other main advantage was that, during the winter, the small area of the closet-bed would be warmed by body heat. This meant the stove would not need to be kept stoked at night. The door would not be shut completely, but left open a bit. During the 16th and 17th century, closet-beds were much smaller. Lying down was associated with death, and therefore sleeping was done in a half-upright position. These closet-beds held two people, and beneath them were often drawers that pulled out and provided beds for the children.

Desk A desk or bureau is a piece of furniture with a flat table-style work surface used in a school, office, home or the like for academic, professional or domestic activities such as reading, writing, or using equipment such as a computer. Desks often have one or more drawers, compartments, or pigeonholes to store items such as office supplies and papers. Desks are usually made of wood or metal, although materials such as glass are sometimes seen. Some desks have the form of a table, although usually only one side of a desk is suitable to sit at (there are some exceptions, such as a partners desk), unlike most usual tables. Some desks do not have the form of a table, for instance, an armoire desk is a desk built within a large wardrobe-like cabinet, and a portable desk is light enough to be placed on a person's lap. Since many people lean on a desk while using it, a desk must be sturdy. In most cases, people sit at a desk, either on a separate chair or a built-in chair (e.g., in some school desks). Some people use standing desks to be able to stand while using them.
